Melbourne is filled with talented creatives that simply turn their passion into an everyday affair. One of our favourite street photographers, Liz McLeish of StreetSmith had the pleasure to meet with Designers Bridget McCall and Nicholas Van Messner to talk about the Summer Collection shown during MSFW.
IT MUST BE AMAZING SHARING YOUR PASSION WITH A PARTNER, WHEN DID YOU FIRST KNOW YOU WANTED TO START A LABEL TOGETHER? WAS IT A DECISION OR NATURAL EVOLUTION?
When Nicholas and I met he was finishing his final year at RMIT and I was styling. We had known independently that we wanted to do our own lines but hadn’t really given it much more thought than that. Within a few months of us dating we decided that we wanted to start our own label. It felt completely right to both of us to work together as we had the same vision and a similar aesthetic but could bring different strengths to the table.
AT STREET SMITH WE ARE CONSTANTLY INSPIRED BY THE GARMENTS YOU CREATE. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE THE SPRING SUMMER COLLECTION YOU’LL BE SHOWING NEXT WEEK AT MSFW?
Actually the starting point to the Summer collection is very close to my heart. Its called Stills and embodies the notion of memories being captured through the photographic medium. I studied photography and it still plays a large roll in our creative vision and in the creative process of our collections as a whole. Some of Digital prints were derived from looking at different focal planes, and the silhouettes came from the notion of looking at balance and compositions.
