Meet creative director Cynthia Sakai, founder and designer behind the Italian-made, LA-based jewellery line Vita Fede. Inspired by art, architecture and culture from the past, present and future, Vita Fede combines different elements of inspiration to create the VF aesthetic: Timeless luxury with a feminine modern twist. Cynthia’s commitment to make each collection a natural progression from the last results in a highly edited line that builds on the success the brand has enjoyed since 2007.
Is there a specific moment in your life that inspired you to start Vida Fede?
A friend of mine gave me a beautiful Italian bracelet as a gift and I absolutely adored the detail and the craftsmanship of the piece. I became so intrigued with the design and how I would re-work it and re-imagine it if I were the designer. It was in that moment that I realized I had the capacity for jewelry design and that it was something I wanted to pursue.
Were you always interested in pursuing a career in Jewellery Design/ Making?
My mother has worked in fashion for many years and my father is an architect, so I think that design is part of my DNA. When I was 18, I launched a small accessories line and by 21 I had founded a multi-brand showroom in Los Angeles. A few years later, Vita Fede was born and I have been focused on that ever since.
Once you have a concept for a new design, what is your process like?
Each collection is a journey and reflection of the cultures, languages, architecture and natural scenery in the cities I have visited. Every piece is designed with both form and function in mind, resulting in substantial, sophisticated, wearable works of art. We are consistently pushing ourselves to create innovative pieces while at the same time re-interpreting the classics our customers love in new and unique materials and styles.
Do you think being different or “fresh’ is more important than it used to be now that the internet is saturated with self-starter creatives?
One of the reasons why I love jewelry is because there are so many options to choose from. There is so much beautiful product out there, but it’s always been crucial to me that my product is unique and different from anything else on the market. With that said, we’re not about being different just for the sake of it – we listen to clients and we make the product they want to see from us. We have a very clear vision for our brand and we strive to continue evolving while still retaining those essential elements that define Vita Fede. To me, this means creating jewelry that transitions seamlessly from season to season and from trend to trend.
What sets you and the brand apart from other designers?
Vita Fede is a fusion of Asian, American and European culture, inspired by my constant travels around the world. We continually explore innovative new ways of using natural materials, such as wood, crystals and a variety of stones in the collections. These elements, combined with precious metals and a bold architectural aesthetic give life to the signature Vita Fede style.
