Meet The Maker: Lauren Besser of Maripossa Jewellery

Maripossa is a Melbourne-based jewellery line of finely crafted, easy to wear bracelets and necklaces. Each piece is hand crafted for a refined take on everyday minimalism. We talked to Lauren about her early inspirations and how simple details can add refinement to any look. Meet the maker...

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW MARIPOSSA GOT STARTED?

I studied psychology at university, in between, which I deferred and did a fashion course at The Melbourne School of Fashion and then headed overseas to Santa Cruz in California to finish my degree on exchange. I travelled for around a year from California through Central and South America, and made the decision during that trip that rather than pursuing psychology I needed to follow my passion for creating. The name Maripossa spawned from this trip, it's a take on the Spanish word for butterfly, butterflies and Spanish being two loves of mine. Maripossa then evolved quite naturally. After a few random jobs I decided to put together a mini collection of pieces after having experimented with weaving and crocheting chain. I was out one evening showing some people the pieces when a patron behind us saw the jewellery and asked to purchase all of them. The rest is kind of history.

WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN PROCESS LIKE?

I don't have a specific methodical process. I don't follow a traditional design or conceptualisation process. Rather I'm constantly designing, thinking of  new ideas and ways to do things differently or transform something into something else entirely. On the occasions I put to pen to paper to draw, once I begin making the pieces they generally take on a life of their own and morph into something completely different from the original intention. Working with such a malleable material means I've had to really let go of the rigidity that comes with having a predetermined idea or picture in mind, and learn to adapt together with the designs as they naturally form.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR COLLECTION?

The current collection, Qualia, is all about perception. We see the world not as it is, but as we are. Qualia are the building blocks of creation, rooted in consciousness. Consciousness is the material of creation. Rocks aren't solid; water isn't wet; light isn't bright. These are all Qualia created in your consciousness.
The lush redness of a rose is a Qualia, as is its scent. So too the smoothness of silk and the roughness of beach sand. The only reality we can possibly know is the Qualia interpreted for us by our brains. There is no way to know that reality exists outside Qualia. They are units of perception, and reality is a perceptual collage and therefore there is no difference between seeing a red rose and imagining it. This concept both fascinates and terrifies me.

WHAT ELSE IS INFLUENTIAL TO YOUR WORK? ARE THERE ARTISTS OR DESIGNERS THAT YOU LOOK UP TO?

Wow, far too many to name here! but yes and yes. I admire the works of many designers and artists, both unknown and well regarded.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN MELBOURNE? WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT?

I was born in Melbourne and have lived here for my 32 years of life, with many travels overseas in between. I think Melbourne is without a doubt one of the best cities in the world. We have wonderful culture, art, music, nightlife, and many nooks and crannies to get lost in. It's elegant and soulful. It's a city that I think allows for both introverts and extraverts to thrive in.

WHAT'S CURRENTLY INSPIRING YOU?

Bill Withers is always on rotation… but i'm loving Meshell Ndegeocello, Milkwaukee Banks, Ludovico Einaudi and Concha Buika. As for books I've just finished reading Andre Breton's 'Nadja' and i'm in the middle of about 10 other books (which is normal for me) mostly philosophical. A short one by Paul Eluard and a fascinating book about free-will by Mark Balaguer are two I'm currently reading.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT? ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS YOU ARE EXCITED ABOUT?

2015 is going to be  a big year! We've been working away on a super exciting project with Swarovski. It's a new Swarovski owned concept which will see Maripossa stocked globally alongside brands such as Versace, Escada, Jean Paul Gaultier and Valentino early next year. I'm very much looking forward to seeing it unfold.

WHAT ITEM(S) IS/ARE ALWAYS IN YOUR BAG?

YSL Touche Eclat, Blistex, Lancôme lip balm, Wrigley’s PK Gum, a small babushka doll, Vick’s inhaler (an unfortunate addiction) and a Labradorite stone.
